WALE feat. LADY GAGA "CHILLIN'" VIDEO TEASER

I was excited to see a link to the Wale / Lady Gaga video, directed by Chris Robinson, in my email today. A few of my friends and I were "extras" in this video, so it will be interesting to see how the final product comes out. In the meantime, enjoy this teaser!

(Chillin will debut on June 1, 2009 as the MTV Jam of the Week)

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "FUNKORAMA" - REDMAN

My brother from another mother, aka Kas, selected this joint...I'm riding with it because it was a banger and def. a track that I listened to A LOT.

Redman is seriously underrated...I think people forget home many joints this dude has in his catalog.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "BUCKEM DOWN" - BLACKMOON

Blackmoon / Boot Camp ran a good part of the 90's. To this day, I still get hype when I hear a Blackmoon or BCC track (and YES, I said hype)

This just goes to show that hot music will remain hot, no matter how many years go by. I wish someone would let these skinny jeans wearing dudes know...

To the weak, what we do, buckem down, word life

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "MAD IZM" CHANNEL LIVE feat. KRS-ONE

Channel Live has KRS on some marijuana appreciation ish...haha...oh, the 90's.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "WHERE MY HOMIEZ" - ILL feat. AL SCRATCH

"Where My Homiez" was an anthem when I was coming up. Everyone loved this song. This joint brings back craaaaaazy memories.

Enjoy

MICK BOOGIE x MC HAMMER - HAMMERTIME (June 2, 2009)

Ok, I can't front...when I logged into my email account and saw the press release for this project, my initial reaction was "Seriously?!?" It was a feeling of both confusion and surprise...LOL

This isn't because I'm not a fan of MC Hammer (please believe I had the Hammer doll, assorted pairs of Hammer Pants and even won several dance contests, as a child, with the song "HammerTime" blaring in the background); I was just a little thrown off by the combination of Mick Boogie and MC Hammer. I've been lucky enough to host a party with Mick, here in Boston, so I've seen him do his thing live and I'm a huge fan of his mixtape projects. He's always doing something fresh and I'm sure this cd will be one that everyone will enjoy once it drops.

Check the press release below and look out for HammerTime, available for free download on June 2, 2009.

Shout out to Dan Solomito for the info!

Mick Boogie Teams up with 90's Icon MC Hammer for Latest Mixtape Project

New York, NY - Mick Boogie and thepressplayshow.com are proud to announce details on their newest project, Hammertime, hosted by MC Hammer. The mixtape contains Hammer's classics as well as the samples from which they came, and some present day remixes.

On Hammertime, Mick Boogie takes you on a ride through the past, present, and future, using the original samples to intro some of Hammers biggest hits, as well as a few new remixes of Hammer's most memorable records. Songs like Rick James "Superfreak" and The Chi-lites "Have You Seen Her" will remind listeners where some of Hammer's biggest hits came from.

The project also features some of the brightest up and coming rappers like Mistah FAB, Chip Tha Ripper, and Izza Kizza, as well as Hammer himself re-spitting a couple classic verses. Production on the remixes comes by way of Mick Boogie, Good Life Mike, nVme and more.

Interludes throughout the tape include Hammer himself talking about life, the music business, and the impact he had on the world. The clips are taken from a recent interview Mick Boogie and Terry Urban did on their Shade 45, Press Play radio show earlier this month with Hammer, which spawned the idea to create this unique project.

Hammertime will be free for download exclusively at www.PressPlayShow.com on June 2, and across the internet June 3.

For more information, details on the project or press inquiries, please contact Dan Solomito - dsolo13@gmail.com.

I'M BACK, B*TCHES!

Man...the last 2 weeks were something else. My hard drive passed away (R.I.P) and I was forced to be without my baby (aka my Mac) for what seemed like an eternity. During this time, I discovered that I am TOTALLY dependent up my tech devices and that's scary. I also discovered that if you can't say anything nice, you truly should not say anything at all. Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words break hearts.

Anyhow, I KNOW I missed a bunch of ish. I wasn't able to post about the epic rocking of Charles Hamilton's jaw or about that home wrecker Rihanna, seen in New York City with my husband aka Drake...LOL

But I'm back now...so we'll return to the madness which is The Restless Mind, tomorrow.

COLDPLAY - LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT (Free Live Album*)

I've been faithfully riding with Coldplay since I first heard their single "Yellow", back in 2000 and I have never been displeased with any of their albums since then. To me, they are by far one of the most consistent and creative rock bands of our generation.

On May 15, Coldplay began giving away free copies of their 9 track live album "Left Right Left Right Left" on their website (via download*) and at each of their live performances, to show gratitude to their loyal fans, stating:

“Playing live is what we love. This album is a thank you to our fans – the people who give us a reason to do it and make it happen.”

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "HELL BOUND" - THE ALMIGHTY RSO

I've show love to various groups / artists through the "Throwback Thursday" entries, but I can't say I support where I'm at (Boston) and not show love to The Almighty RSO (E-Devious aka Twice Thou, Orange Man, Tony Rhome, Ray Dog aka Benzino , DJ Deff Jeff and former member Rock who was killed in 1991.)

People can say whatever they wish...but The RSO will be always be considered Boston vets, on more than a music level.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "KEEP IT STREET" - CONCRETE CLICK

Concrete Click (consisting of KT aka Killa Tactics and DRAGGER aka The Dreaded) hailed from Boston and we're well known for their raw lyricism.

KT is still revered as one of Boston's most talented and unmatched emcces.

Keep it Street was on the groups "Lyrical Terrorism EP", released in 1995.

Joey Politics...I see you, my dude!!!

THROWBACK THURSDAY: "I GOT TO HAVE IT" - EDO G.

EDO G. is another vet and this song is a classic hip hop anthem. Deny it, I dare you.

The following is a reference / full length version of Drake's "Take You Down". The track will appear on The Empire's The Drought is Over mixtape (which actually should have dropped last week...but still hasn't*)...

Don't be fooled by the smooth R&B tone of the track...this is some real sh*t.

Enjoy.

RESPECT THE ARCHITECT: STEVIE WONDER

Today is the 59th "Born Day" of musical genius, Stevie Wonder. I have many childhood memories of waking up to my mother singing along with Stevie's records on Saturday mornings and me watching in awe, as his bead-clad head would sway back and forth during various Grammy performances.

The man has been creating beautiful music, since he was a child and his catalog is beyond serious. His influence can be witnessed through some of our generations most gifted musicians. Below are a few of his classic songs that have been sampled by respected hip hop artists. Enjoy and always remember to Respect The Architect.

NEW ALBUM FROM THE LATE HIP-HOP LEGEND J DILLA COMING JUNE 2!

Executive produced by Dilla’s mother, Ms. Yancey AKA “Madukes

New York, NY----- By now most everyone is familiar with the story of musical legend J Dilla. The quiet, prolific producer collaborated with everyone from Eryka Badu to Common to Janet Jackson to Prince. Dilla was just beginning to capitalize on his cult status when he sadly passed at age 32 due to Lupus-related complications. Jay Stay Paid is a 28 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, "J$P" also offers a few guests vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, Havoc of Mobb Deep, M.O.P. , Raekwon and more.

Curtailing any notion of jumping on some sort of Dilla bangwagon, Jay Stay Paid was executive produced by Dilla's mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) along with the musical supervision of Dilla's only real musical idol, Pete Rock. "It wasn't rushed and it wasn't haphazard," explains Ms Yancey. "This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing...this is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy."

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock as the program director. With regards to Pete's involvement, Ms. Yancey gets very excited, "Dilla wanted to pattern himself behind Pete. His dream was to become as close as possible to what Pete stood for. Pete meant everything to him. Dilla would have just been flabbergasted! " Pete's sentiments were the same toward Dilla, "Dude was amazing. He just kinda came outta nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be here with us, but it's all good we're going to keep his music alive and well."

In the late 80s, Dilla founded the seminal rap group Slum Village and put Detroit hip-hop on the map, while the 90's saw him playing a major role in the production team The Ummah with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing extensive work on Tribe Called Quest's last two albums.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GAME: WALE x LADY GAGA VIDEO SHOOT

Yesterday may have been one of the most random, spontaneous and fun-filled days I've had in a long time.

Thanks to the good people at Karmaloop.com & Elitaste.com, I found myself in the middle of Chelsea, MA yesterday afternoon, amongst an interesting array of people, preparing to shoot a scene for the Wale (Interscope*) and Lady Gaga's single "Chillin"...cast as an "extra" (although they did give the kid way more burn than expected..., GLO "J" LOL)

I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The invite left a great deal to the imagination:

Congrats, you've been chosen to appear in Interscope artist Wale's video for "Chillin" ft Lady Gaga. The video is filming Monday, May 4th in Boston(Chelsea*). Chris Robinson is the director. Attached is a waiver you MUST bring with you to the set. Your location is -

Thanks so much for your interest and hope to see everybody tomorrow night.

My main question, to myself, was "what in the HELL is hip/street cool" in terms of clothing...lol, followed by "why in the HELL are they shooting this video in CHELSEA?!?"

Anyhow, I figured it out and made my way to Chelsea, arriving a little before 3pm. The next few hours consisted of lots of waiting (and eating*)...followed by more waiting. Finally, around 5:30pm things started to move. The shoot assistants moved us (us=about 30 girls and guys, all shades, dressed in their own translation of hip/street cool...and not so cool...lol) to a back street where Wale, Chris Robinson and his production crew were (along with some additional assistants, stylists and such*). All types of lights and cameras were set up. They def. have a nice budget worked out for Mr. Wale...

We were split into two groups, given some "props" (I won't say what they were, you'll have to wait for the video to drop*) for the first shot and told to flow into the street, a few steps behind Wale, after he made his entrance through a huge banner. A handful of us were selected to enter directly behind him ::they showed your girl some love although some people tried to stampede past us, but we'll see what happens once the video drops, lol:: We shot the scene about 4 times and then wrapped at about 6:45pm.

But...just as we went to collect our things, myself, my new friend Ali and a handful of other females were pulled to the side and asked to be in the final scene of the video, being shot at Concepts in Harvard Square, MA.

About an hour later, I find myself in the downstairs lounge area of Concepts, which is a high end sneaker / lifestyle boutique in Cambridge MA (Shout to my family: Deon, Chedda Tom & Frank The Butcher*). There was a nice assortment of women and men downstairs (Shout out to Africa & the Karmaloop models...I have *totally hetero* girl crushes on each of you...LOL), waiting to take part in the "club scene". They placed us in certain areas, things got moving, music was blasting, the lights were flashing and it was pretty much a party down there (who ever made the drinks did their damn THING...lol). Wale was looking pretty damn fresh and his Louis Vuitton Graffiti duffle bag was sick...sorry, but I had to say something because it matched perfectly, you'll see when the video drops. We shot the scene several times and wrapped at about 1am.

This was an experience. I'm typically the type of person who likes to be behind the scenes, organizing and planning things, so it was fun to be part of something like this. It was also nice to meet someone as successful Chris Robinson and find out that he's still humble and very much passionate about what he does. The same can be said for Wale, who's well on his way but remains humble. I know yesterday must have been a big day for him and he kept it cool the entire time. I wish the man nothing but success, I feel lucky to have been involved in the shoot, even if it was on a small level and I look forward to seeing the finished product once the video is release.

I tried to take a few pics with my cell phone...although I wasn't supposed to...LOL I'll update this entry with them soon. The pics up now are from the morning part of the shoot with Lady Gaga.

Seems like Busta Rhymes has been on his GRIZZLY lately...a feature here, a feature there...video here, mixtape there. I'm not mad though. Everything I've heard thus far has been pretty official. I'm ready to buy the album strictly on GP after hearing "Respect My Conglomerate".

RESPECT THE ARCHITECT: MARVIN GAYE

I was recently having a conversation with a close from about the deterioration of true musicians in certain genres of music (mainly hip hop and R&B*). I often find myself wondering which artists TRULY have the talent, drive and professional stamina to secure a place and stand the test of time.

I wonder where our generations Aretha Franklin is. Who is our generations next Marvin Gaye? Where will our classics be pulled from and why does it seem that many of artists we hear on the radio and see in videos are lacking authentic soul and passion for what it is they do?

I wonder if it comes from lack of struggle or life experience...or the inability to pull from their own personal struggles and transfer that emotion into music, as many of the true greats have.

When I watch the above performance by Marvin Gaye, you could see the passion and emotion in the performance. The man rocked for a FULL house of his peers, dolo on the stage. Just him and his mic.

And he shut it DOWN.

No hype man. No entourage. No back-up singers. No back-up dancers.

Just pure talent and passion.

SHOW SOME RESPECT: BUSTA RHYMES x LIL’ WAYNE x JADAKISS...

Busta never fails when it comes to making hard hitting, head nodding tracks. "Respect My Conglomerate" is no exception. He, Lil Wayne and Jadakiss murdered this.

Busta's album "Bullshit" drops on May 19th.
